Back-to-School Season: What Chiropractors Want Parents to Know

Posted in Lumbosacral and Pelvic on Sep 8, 2025

Every September, we watch families go through the same mix of emotions—children buzzing with excitement, parents snapping photos on the front porch, and teachers preparing their classrooms for a new year.

It’s a special season, no doubt. But in our chiropractic office, we also notice another side to back-to-school: more young patients coming in with posture-related problems.

It may sound surprising, but many of the habits kids fall into during the school year—hours on laptops, slouching over phones, or hauling backpacks heavier than they are—set the stage for pain and imbalance much earlier than most parents expect.

Posture Problems Are Starting Younger Than Ever

When we were kids, homework meant pen and paper. Free time usually meant heading outside, riding bikes, or playing until the streetlights came on. Today, schoolwork happens on screens, and even downtime with friends often involves devices.

We’re seeing children as young as seven or eight showing posture issues that used to be reserved for adults. Rounded shoulders, forward head tilt, complaints of headaches—these are becoming common sights in our practice.

Backpacks: A Daily Strain on Growing Spines

Backpacks are another hidden culprit. Many kids carry the equivalent of two bowling balls on their backs every single day. If they wear the bag on one shoulder, or let it sag too low, the spine has to work overtime to compensate. Over the weeks and months, that strain adds up.

We often hear parents say, “But kids are resilient.” True—yet resilience doesn’t mean invincible. Growing bodies adapt to stress, and sometimes those adaptations show up later as chronic tension or poor posture patterns that are hard to undo.

Signs to Watch For at Home

Children rarely describe their discomfort in ways that make it obvious. Instead, you may notice little things:

  • They can’t sit still long enough to finish homework.
  • They slump at the dinner table, no matter how many times you remind them to sit up straight.
  • They complain of “tired shoulders” or headaches after a long school day.
  • You notice one shoulder higher than the other when they stand.

These are signals their body may be struggling more than it should.

Why This Matters More Than Just “Looking Straight”

Good posture isn’t about appearances—it’s about function. Proper alignment supports better breathing, helps children focus, reduces fatigue, and prevents unnecessary stress on muscles and joints. When the spine is balanced, the body works the way it was designed to, leaving more energy for learning, play, and growth.

What Parents Can Do Right Now

The encouraging part? You don’t need to overhaul your child’s routine. A few simple adjustments can go a long way:

  • Pick the right backpack. Wide, padded straps and a snug fit help distribute weight evenly. Always encourage both shoulders.
  • Keep the load light. A backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of your child’s body weight. Help them clean out what isn’t necessary each week.
  • Check their study space. A table or desk that positions the screen at eye level makes a big difference. Avoid homework on the couch or bed, where slouching is inevitable.
  • Build in breaks. Every half hour, have them stretch, walk, or do a quick movement break. Even two minutes helps reset posture.
  • Balance screen time with real movement. Sports, outdoor play, or even a bike ride all counteract sitting for hours.

When a Chiropractic Check-Up Makes Sense

Sometimes, even with the right habits, we see kids who continue to struggle. If your child consistently complains of aches, if you notice uneven shoulders, or if slouching seems to be their “default,” it may be time for a professional look.

Back-to-school season will always come with its joys and challenges. While you’re packing lunches, shopping for supplies, and adjusting to new schedules, take a moment to notice how your child is carrying themselves—literally.

Posture is a habit that forms young, and with just a little attention now, you can help your child grow strong, confident, and pain-free for years to come.

From our perspective as chiropractors, it’s about more than straight backs. It’s about giving children the best chance to thrive—in the classroom, on the playground, and everywhere life takes them.
